On to Key West

Key West is definitely a different oceanic experience. No miles of beaches or big chain stores here. Coral reefs, natural island landscape, and, in the old historic area, lots of quaint little houses surrounded by palm trees. Though I spent most of the afternoon driving I did manage to see a few things before sundown. Thanks to the lady that works at this also quaint little hotel.

House on the Keys

Speaking of the hotel, it is very neat. Not big, but as big as I can afford in on Key West. Then again, why would anyone need a big room in Key West? It does have a TV but I don’t plan on turning it on. The room key is really a key, not a card, and the key chain is a bottle opener. :O)

I went to the restaurant Katie recommended out by the waterside which was just a short walk away and nabbed some food. There was a man there with an acoustic guitar playing music and taking requests. LOL people kept requesting songs he didn’t know….so I took a dollar and put it in the jar on the small stage and asked him to play “She Talks to Angles” by the Black Crowes….and he said “hey I know that one!!!”. I could tell it was one of his favorites to do and he acted surprised that I requested that particular song. He did a pretty good job and I think everyone enjoyed the performance.

Anchors Away! No Really, its Away!

I then walked down to a popular spot on Key West to watch the sunset and also where a bunch of people perform all sorts of crazy things for money. I walked up on one just about to start and it was an African American man who was 51 years old that was in amazing shape doing all kinds of tumbling and physical tricks. He’s been performing for well over 30 years and even spent some time in New York. Absolutely amazing!!! He sat a soda can on top of a public trash can, stood back, ran really fast, flew over the can sideways like Superman, while doing a summersault, grabbed the can, flipped and landed on his feet. He continued to “wow” the crowd even more and I must say it was one of the better street displays I have ever seen.

Sunset

A little cautiously aware of the area I knew I would have to walk back into at night, mostly because I don’t know the area, I headed back to the Hotel. It is soooooo peaceful here and there are some strict rules about noise, especially at night. I hopped into the lighted pool and floated on my back. My ears being under water meant they could not hear any noise, everything was quite, but I could see the stars and the passing clouds with an array of swaying palm trees as the picture frame to God’s nightly masterpiece. I’ve never taken the time to do something like that, but it was a nice moment. :O)

Key West will be a good, and different, experience I think. There is a real and musty ocean smell here. It’s not about long sandy beaches and bikinis, though there is no shortage of beautiful women here :OP…..but it is more about coral reefs, ammmmmaaaazingly colored water, socializing, an island feel, and some history. Everywhere you go there are people putting around on mopeds and bicycles, wandering the island streets and waterways. Key West is certainly unique, and beautiful, in its own little way. :O)

  1. Sounds like your having a lot of fun. Swimming at night is something that we wanted to do but our hotel was taken over by a mob of teenager church kids. Needless to say the pool was never that peaceful. :) We also went to a restaurant that had a guitar player and it made it really nice.
